The Fringe District:

Where Kingsland, Eden Park & Morningside converge…

We’re growing! The Fringe District (Kingsland Business Society Inc.) is proposing an expansion of our Business Improvement District (BID) to include more of our vibrant business community across Kingsland, Morningside, and the Eden Park precinct.

If you’re part of the proposed area, this page has everything you need to know, what it means, how to vote, and how to get involved.

The Fringe District – who we are

The Fringe District is your local business association, run by Kingsland Business Society Inc. We represent and support the businesses of Kingsland, Eden Park, and Morningside, working together to grow our local economy and create a vibrant, connected precinct.

What is a BID?

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership where local businesses and property owners work together to invest in their area. Funds are collected through a small Targeted Rate and reinvested into safety, promotion, events, advocacy, placemaking, and more.

  • This is business-led and business-managed.
  • Auckland Council only collects the rate and returns it in full.
  • It’s businesses working together – for businesses.

How many BIDs are there?

There are 50+ BIDs across Auckland – from Takapuna to Newmarket to Henderson. Together, they represent thousands of businesses and tens of thousands of employees.

WHY EXPAND?

Our neighbourhood has grown beyond the original Kingsland BID boundary. Morningside’s creative-commercial scene, businesses surrounding Eden Park, and other fringe precincts are now part of the community, but not part of the BID.

Expanding means:
• A stronger, unified voice for advocacy
• More funding for marketing, security & events
• Greater visibility and collective strength
• Equal access to BID-led support & initiatives

Our current BID generates $245k/year.
The expansion would lift that to $370k — unlocking more for everyone.

BENEFITS

Being part of the BID gives your business access to:

Advocacy with Council, AT, Eden Park, Local Boards

Marketing & Promotion (socials, storytelling, signage)

Events & Activations like Date Night, Art Battle, NZ Music Month

Safety & Security like patrols, lighting, and infrastructure

Digital strategy, content, campaigns

Placemaking murals, lighting, festive upgrades

Dedicated Management to lead and deliver the work

Together, we achieve what no one business could do alone.

Independent Outreach Team –

Coming to You

As part of the BID Expansion process, we’ve engaged an independent outreach team to visit businesses in the proposed expansion area.

They’re here to:
• Walk you through the why, what, when, and who of the BID Expansion
• Create an accurate and up-to-date database of all businesses in the area
• Ensure everyone eligible gets the opportunity to vote
• Ask: What’s important to you?

This is your opportunity to have a say before the vote, even if you’re still on the fence.

Why an Independent Party?

We need a verified and transparent map of who owns or operates each business in the BID Expansion area.

We want to be sure no one misses their right to vote.

Your responses are shared with the Fringe District Board as a neutral snapshot of business priorities.

This ensures fairness, clarity, and a strong understanding of what matters to your part of the district.

Why Are We Asking What Matters to You?

The needs of businesses in Morningside, Kingsland, and the Eden Park precinct may differ from the current BID.

We’re asking what’s important to you because:
• Our board needs insight into your values, challenges, and goals
• We want to reflect those in our 2026–2027 planning
• We’re inviting new board members from the expansion area to represent your voice

This expansion is about inclusion, representation, and working better, together.

Meet Us In Person to Kōrero

You’ll meet our BID Manager, Claire, along with board members and our out reach team at very meeting. We’ll invite special guests too to help answer questions, like Local Albert Eden Board Members, Auckland Transport, Eden Park.

FAQs

Do I get a say?
Yes – every business and landlord gets one vote.

Is this run by Council?
No – it’s business-led. Council just collects and returns the funds.

Do I have to be part of it if it passes?
Yes, but you’ll also share in the benefits and influence.

What if I rent, not own?
Most landlords pass the rate through to tenants. Either way, you get the vote and the benefits.
